Marathon Oil's 2008 Living our Values report details the company's efforts in corporate social responsibility activities and initiatives.
International oil and gas producer, Marathon Oil has released its 2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report “Living Our Values." The company’s report focuses on five areas:
The report has been compiled in accordance with the Oil and Gas Industry Guidance on Voluntary Sustainability Reporting. Health and SafetyThe company manages its health and safety risks on a “plan, do, check, adjust” framework, common to many risk management programs. In 2008, Marathon Oil recorded less reportable incidents, made improvements in the training of staff in hazard identification and implemented a panel of internal and external stakeholders focusing on safety of new hires. Marathon Oil is working towards having all refineries certified under the Voluntary Protection Program and provides a workforce health program for eligible employees. The workforce health program provides coverage for specific health assessments in the United States and health promotion programs including quit smoking and weight management programs. An evaluation of the health promotion programs has found that improvements in participant’s health related behaviours. Environmental StewardshipOil and gas production require the use of natural resources, in 2008 Marathon Oil focused on reducing its impact on the natural environment through decreased greenhouse gas emissions and developing corporate strategies to further address carbon emissions and investigate new technologies. The company’s environmental management activities led to a 1.5% decrease in total energy consumption compared to 2007. Honesty and IntegrityAs part of corporate social responsibility, transparency in business dealings is required. Marathon Oil reports that 65% of eligible employees have completed voluntary ethics training. In 2008, the company also formed internal investigations committee to undertake inquiries into reported breaches of ethics and the company’s code of conduct. As an international company with some Third World country sites, Marathon Oil has strict anti-corruption requirements for its business dealings. It is compliant with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and undertakes annual anti-corruption compliance audits for all non-US operations. At its facilities in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, Marathon Oil is voluntarily participating in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. Corporate CitizenshipMarathon Oil’s 2008 Living Our Values Report and company website report a strong commitment to the principles of corporate social responsibility and corporate citizenship. The company has chosen to dedicate a section of its 2008 Living Our Values report solely to the activities and initiatives it has undertaken to support its stated aim of being a positive influence. Stakeholder engagement has been one of Marathon Oil’s corporate citizenship focuses and the company has hosted a variety of forums and meetings with various stakeholder groups. Issues reported to the company are included in social risk assessments undertaken on projects. Security and human rights are also important for Marathon Oil, with the company supporting UN Declaration on Human Rights. Recognising that corporate citizens are part of a community, Marathon Oil reports that it works to develop strong community relationships through providing local employment opportunities and supporting community capacity building and community development. In Equatorial Guinea, the company has provided assistance to reduce the incidence of malaria, a major African public health problem. High Performance TeamThe corporate social responsibility commitment has also been extended to apply to employees of Marathon Oil. The company’s High Performance Team strategy provides a commitment to employee development and providing work life balance. Highlights of this area of Marathon Oil’s 2008 corporate social responsibility strategy include development of an educational pathway to assist newly hired engineers and to decrease knowledge loss; support of the UN’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and focusing on recruiting a diverse workforce. Marathon Oil’s 2008 Living Our Values Report summarises the company’s efforts in corporate social responsibility activities. As an oil and gas producer, the company requires natural resources however it is actively seeking ways to minimise environmental harm through the search for new technologies and a decrease in emissions. Marathon Oil’s people strategies include stakeholder engagement, high performance team environment for staff and a focus on the health and safety of both staff and contractors to the company.
